 Why should I take notes?

  •  You can forget up to 80% of what you hear within two weeks. Organized note-taking leads to longer memory and better academic performance.

  •  Taking notes enables you to be an active listener thereby involving you in the process of learning.

 

 HOW TO TAKE ORGANIZED AND EFFECTIVE NOTES

 

Before Class:

  •  Skim the material assigned or notes from last class.

  •  Adopt the attitude that you intend to listen.

  •  Arrive to class with time to get ready.

  •  If possible, sit in the front of the room. Avoid distractions.

  •  Date and title your notes before the lecture begins.

During the lecture:

  •  Listen for and write down the following information:

            A.  Main ideas. (Teachers will often write this info on the board or emphasize it).

                  1. Definition

                  2. Explanations

            B.  Info which supports the main idea

                  1. Examples

                  2. Important details. Ie: "steps in a process, causes or reasons for".

                  3. Quotes

                  4. Facts / figures

                  5.  Events/ Personal experience

            C. Commentary

                  1. This includes the statements which discusses how the examples, details,    

                       etc. explain and/or relates to the main idea.  "This shows that...." "As a   

                        result...."

            D. Listen and watch for .........

                   1.  Ideas which are repeated

                   2.  Pointing

                   3.  Important remarks such as: "Pay special attention to...

                                                                              "Focus on..."

                                                                               " Important reasons include..."

                   4.  Change in the teacher's voice. Ie: change in speed, volume, pitch

            

             E. Raise your hand and ask a question. Teachers take notice of students who

                   show interest and curiosity.

 

             F. Take notes during class discussions and at the end of class as well.

                    1. In the last five minutes,  some of the most important ideas are shared.

 

After Class:

  •    Make an appointment to see the teacher for clarification of material.

  •    Briefly review , revise and edit your notes as soon as possible. (Ideally   before the next class).
