We are grateful to The Women's Seamans Friends Society for the grant to engage in an ecological/disease-oriented study using Limulus polyphemus, the horseshoe crab, an organism of medicinal importance.  Limulus in LIS is  an endangered species.  The students are studying the genetic variations in LIS and relating the SNPs to those causing breast cancer and diseases in humans. List of Grants

The Biotechnology Research Project class is studying the mitochondrial cytochrome oxidase complex genes known for their genetic variations and implicated in many human diseases. They design primers to amplify the genes by PCR  and sequence these genes using the school's ABI Prism 310 Genetic Analyzer (single capillary automated sequencer). They disseminate their work via poster presentations to the scientific community each year. list of poster presentations

The SHA Human Gene Discovery Laboratory classes studies the effects of gene polymorphisms. They collect data on a genetic disease in a family, construct a pedigree, and perform PCR, Restriction Enzyme Digests, and DNA Sequencing in the laboratory.  Samples of their work are displayed in the lab.

Genetic Ethical Issues  focuses on Eugenics and Human Subject Research, Genetic Testing, Gene Therapies, stem Cell Research, Cloning, and Immunization.  This interdisciplinary course, concentrates on controversial issues surrounding DNA and genetic technology.
